Summary
Join us for a 12-week Plein Air Challenge in Cadillac! Each Tuesday, we’ll gather at a different outdoor location to draw, sketch, or paint from life while enjoying the beauty of Northern Michigan.
Work in any medium you choose—pencil, pen, charcoal, watercolor, oil, acrylic, or pastel. Try something new each week or stick with your favorite.
Attend as many sessions as you like—weekly attendance is encouraged but not required.
Membership to Up North Arts is required for this class. Purchase a membership prior to registering.
Ages: Teens Through Adult (Children under 16 must have parent with them during all challenges.)
Ability Level: Beginner through Advanced

What is Plein Air?
En plein air (French for “in the open air”) is the practice of creating art outdoors, capturing natural light, atmosphere, and fleeting moments directly from observation. While rooted in painting traditions, this experience welcomes all artistic media.

- Dates: Tuesdays, May 5 – July 21, 2026 (12 sessions)
- Time: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
- Location: Various outdoor sites around Cadillac
- Ages: Teens through Adults (under 16 must attend with a parent)
- Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Participation
- Attend as many sessions as you like—weekly attendance is encouraged but not required.
- Set your own goals, whether you’re just starting out or refining your skills.
- Optional weekly challenges will be offered to help you grow.

Session Leaders
Session leaders will:
- Introduce the weekly location and optional challenge
- Keep time and track attendance
- Offer guidance and support
Note: Leaders are facilitators, not formal instructors.
What to Bring
Participants supply their own materials. Bring:
- Your preferred art supplies
- Comfortable clothing
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- Water and snacks
- Anything else you need to stay comfortable and creative outdoors
- Chair
Final Note
Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just curious to try, this is a relaxed, welcoming environment to create, connect, and be inspired by the outdoors.
