Description:
Give an old, unwanted book a new life by turning it into a work of art.
Starting with a new or used book as your canvas, participants will tear away pages and then add their own creative expressions through painting, drawing, collage, rubber stamping, stenciling, photomontage, and writing.

Instruction of altered book techniques will include how to create various pockets, pop-ups, doors, windows, fold outs, and a carved niche to display a special found object.

The focus of the project will be to up-cycle as much as possible using mixed media materials to embellish your covers and pages. The themes and content of your book will be up to your imagination to create a one of-a-kind work of art.

Materials Needed: Students need to bring:

(CLICK HERE TO PRINT A SUPPLY CHECK - LIST)

Supply List:
1. Hardcover Book: Look for a sewn spine, not glued. Spine should be about 3 inches thick and pages should be a sturdy weight. (Not thin like a dictionary page)
2. An additional heavy book to use as a weight while your pages are drying.
3. 2 large glue sticks
4. Craft heat gun or hair blow dryer to speed up process of drying paints and glues as you work. (UNA has two, but if you bring your own, you won’t have to wait in line to use)
5. Decorative papers in a print or color scheme of your choice (4-6 sheets) JoAnn’s, Hobby Lobby, or Michael’s have a lot to choose from.

6. A small object to display inside your book. Could be something special to you or that goes with your theme. Should be something rather flat, less than one inch thick. A few examples might be pieces of old jewelry, pressed flowers, small flat stones, shells, metal charms, etc.

7. Ephemera: Photos, old greeting cards, decorative paper napkins, tickets, post cards, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, letters, poems, receipts, ledger pages, sheet music, scraps of scrapbook papers, stickers, tags, buttons, ribbons, fabric scraps, etc…
*This would be a great opportunity to do a class “ephemera swap” for those who are interested!
